You were probably as floored as I was when you heard that an arrest had been made in the Michelle Martinko case. I was 12 years old when this happened. I recall seeing the face of a beautiful girl on a TV screen and in the newspapers I delivered everyday. I recall hearing about the murder on the radio news and trying to figure out how something like this could happen. They were never able to find anyone. The police asked anyone with information to come forward. There have been lots of tips. None stuck. Until...2006.
On Wednesday, December 19th, 39 years to the day from the last time anyone saw Michelle alive, 64-year old Jerry Lynn Burns was arrested in Manchester, Iowa. The arrest was based on DNA evidence from the vehicle, in which Michelle's lifeless body was found. Burns was processed through the Linn County Correctional Facility and he will make his first court appearance today.
Michelle's parents have passed. I can only imagine they're in heaven with Michelle. I cannot imagine that they care much about the justice meted out on this earth. They sit in the light of Ultimate Justice and Ultimate Mercy. Somehow, any justice we as humans divvy up to the guilty, pales in comparison.
