As my buddy, and co-worker, Matt Kenney, says, "So, that happened."
Tuesday morning, I had just sat down in the air chair, and found that one of the four computers I need to run the Morning Show wasn't responding properly. Now, I can hear you saying, "Doug, why do you need four computers to run the show?" There's a lot that goes into the program that you never see or hear, because it sounds smooth. Not perfect, but smooth. The fact that the Morning Show runs on two stations, with all the booking, guests calling in, remoting broadcasting into the studio, and news, weather, traffic and sports, as well...it is an extraordinary technical feat.
I'm not writing that in order to get props, but because my father worked here in the 1950's and 1960's. I am able to do, alone and in one studio, what used to take nearly a dozen people in multiple studios or even a sound stage. Now, back to the malfunctioning equipment and Tuesday morning.
Inside baseball here-I had no way to directly import at least 20 minutes of audio I need every morning. So, instead, I was forced to spend an hour on a workaround, while I was on the air. I was in the middle of this process when it happened. During a post-newscast conversation with Jason Taylor, what started out as a normal "Doug's Rant," turned into an extended soliloquy/rant. I didn't cuss, and I didn't call anyone out, that I can remember.
Morning Show listener, Randy, offered a profanity laced email to me, guiding me back to my moorings. Thanks, Randy. A received several emails mirroring my frustration, and I am in your corner. However, I am also in MY corner, because you don't need to wake up to the extended rant I offered you. You want news, weather, traffic, sports, tech news, tips for around the house, news for your family, the latest on healthcare, consumer news, money news, entertainment news, GOOD NEWS you can share with people, news about food and drink and entertaining, and how to become a better you.
For just a moment, I didn't give that to you. I'm no different than you, but something comes with having this microphone. For nearly 100 years, we've been a presence in your homes, barns, vehicles, and now with the Internet and the iHeartRadio app, wine bars atop a Barcelona hotel. You expect better. You deserve better. I'll work to be better for you and for me. But, mostly for you. Thanks for your forbearance and understanding, friend.
