Schaake Within Striking Distance

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sophomore Alex Schaake, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 18th place after round one of the NCAA Regionals after carding a two-over-par 73 at the par-71 Scarlet Course that stretches 7,364 yards.

Schaake is tied with Michigan’s Kyle Mueller for the lowest round by an individual not competing with a team, while both are three strokes back of Texas Tech’s Hurly Long (-1) for a birth in the NCAA Championships. The top individual not among the top-five teams in each regional advances to the NCAA Championships.

The Omaha, Nebraska, native started his day on the front nine and birdied the par-four, 427-yard third hole. He had a rough four-hole stretch after that but finished his day with 11 straight holes at par or better.

Schaake fired back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 to finish the back nine at two-under-par.

COACH STITH’S COMMENTS

“Alex had a sloppy stretch on the front, but he stayed patient and played the last 11 holes two-under-par. His ball striking is good and he is rolling the ball well, too. If he can trust his game, and remain patient and disciplined he will be in good shape.”

TUESDAY’S PAIRINGS

The second round begins at 6:30 a.m. (CT). Schaake will tee off on the front nine tomorrow at 9:04 a.m. (CT) with Yale’s Will Berstein and Michigan’s Kyle Mueller.
