Kids Will Be Kids

Who doesn't feel for the students at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School? After what happened in their school, they are in shock. And that's the one of the only reasons I can think that we are hearing some of the things we're hearing from them.

Recently, their school district instituted a rule mandating that students wear a clear/see-through backpack. Ostensibly, this was done in order to create physical transparency, so that staff could identify problem items, and also so students would be able to self-police. Good idea, right? They also increased the number of armed officers on campus and reduced the number of entries to the High School down to four. Here's the reaction:

  • "My new backpack is almost as transparent as the NRA’s agenda."
  • "Clear backpacks are stupid."
  • "We as a country need to focus on the real issue instead of turning our schools into prisons."
  • "I feel soooo safe now."
  • “Starting off the last quarter of senior year right, with a good ol' violation of privacy!”
  • “Now I can’t lie about not having gum.”

I support these children as they express themselves. I remember being their age and feeling that very few of those people older than me either understood or even cared about me. It's natural for kids that age. What is NOT natural is the national media attention these children have garnered (CNN, MSNBC, all the old news outlets at ABC, CBS and NBC). What is NOT natural is all the money poured into their efforts from the likes of Ohfrey, George Clooney, George Soros, etc...these students' voices have been bought by the anti-gun lobby.

See, I think these children aren't aware of their hypocrisy because they have absolutely no world view. This is not criticism, because no children of their age really have a world view. In fact, many adults have no world view, either. What makes this so sad is that these children, whose voices now have size beyond their years and capabilities, have been made to feel as if they are the leaders of a new generation of political activists.

But they aren't. They are children with opinions on politics, facts need not apply. Many of them hung a price tag reading "$1.05" on their backpack, indicating the amount of money the NRA has given to Florida Republican and US Senator, Marco Rubio, for each high school student in the state. The fact is that less than $10,000 has been given to Rubio and other Members of Congress. The inflated dollar amount these children use has been promoted by adults interested in gutting the Second Amendment to the Constitution. The inflated dollar amount include money spent promoting the maintenance of the Second Amendment in the name of the Member of Congress.

But, I digress. Let's get back to these children and their back packs. The same students who comfortably wear their victimhood after having 17 of their classmates brutally murdered among them, are willing to uncloak when it comes to the solution with which THEY do not agree. They ridicule the backpacks and push against additional law enforcement to protect them, rather, seeing them as the enemy.

Erstwhile TV commentator, Bill O'Reilly, said that student leader, David Hogg has powerful, shadowy figures assisting him in leading a boycott of Fox News Channel Commentator and Show Host, Laura Ingraham. Hogg, on MSNBC, responded, "I don't have any shadowy figures behind me... I'm just a kid that uses Twitter if he sees me as powerful that's okay. I don't see myself that way." Well, at least he got one thing right...he's just a kid. A kid who didn't realize that the Constitution guarantees our right to keep and bear arms.

Closing up...let kids be kids. Increase security in schools to help them feel more safe. Teach them civics so they understand how the real Constitution actually works. Progressives, don't elevate them to cult status and to be leaders of your movement to eliminate the Second Amendment. You're setting them up for a horrible fall from both grace and the pedestals upon which you've put them.
