This morning China has again warned of possible military action if Speaker Nancy Pelosi were to visit Taiwan during her Asia trip.
She has arrived in Singapore and will also visit Malaysia, South Korea and Japan during this trip, but there has been no official word on if she will visit the small island nation of Taiwan.
According to the Reuters news agency, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said today that it would be "a gross interference in China's internal affairs" if Pelosi were to stop in Taiwan. He warned it would result in "very serious developments and consequences."
"We would like to tell the United States once again that China is standing by, the Chinese People's Liberation Army will never sit idly by, and China will take resolute responses and strong countermeasures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity," Zhao told a regular daily briefing.
The last Speaker to visit was Newt Gingrich in 1997.
Is this a miscalculation by China? Trying to bully the United States?
Is it now essential that Pelosi includes Taiwan on her Asia trip?
