Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau put brownface on 18 years ago (TIME/West Point Gray Academy)
He's the darling of the left, but like so many before him, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's past racist actions have come back to haunt him.
TIME Magazine says Liberal Trudeau "wore brownface makeup to a party at the private school where he was teaching in the spring of 2001."
Trudeau is facing an election on October 21 and some are calling for him to resign.
More from TIME: "The photograph has not been previously reported. The picture was taken at an “Arabian Nights”-themed gala. It shows Trudeau, then the 29-year-old son of the late former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, wearing a turban and robes with his face, neck and hands completely darkened. The photograph appears in the 2000-2001 yearbook of West Point Grey Academy, a private day school where Trudeau was a teacher."
It is interesting to me that no one seems to be mentioning where his hand is, but maybe that's just me...
Anyway the uncovering of the picture has lead to the expected apology. "I take responsibility for my decision to do that. I shouldn't have done it. I should have known better. It was something that I didn't think was racist at the time, but now I recognize it was something racist to do and I am deeply sorry."
Speaking to reporters after TIME had published the picture, he was asked if this was a one time thing. No it wasn't. He also put on blackface for a play and a photograph of that has since appeared on Twitter.
So should he resign? Should he quit the race to be re-elected?
