Next week a Bill to bring back the death penalty in Iowa will be discussed by the full Senate Judiciary Committee. It's chairman, Sen. Brad Zaun, told us on my show yesterday that he thinks he has the votes to advance it.
If that happens it would be up to Senate leadership to decide whether or not to debate it and vote on it. If ultimately passed, it would have very limited use. Specifically for someone convicted of first degree murder that also included kidnapping and sexual abuse of a minor. Supporters say it is designed to stop rapists from killing their victims.
Currently there is no companion Bill in the Iowa House.
