The Florida Gators have named Aaron Philo as their starting quarterback for the upcoming football season. Head coach Jon Sumrall announced on Monday (August 24) that Philo, a transfer from Georgia Tech, will lead the team in their season opener against Florida Atlantic on Friday (September 5). Philo, a 6-foot-1, 207-pound junior from Bogart, Georgia, emerged victorious in a closely contested competition with Tramell Jones Jr., a redshirt freshman.
Philo's familiarity with the Gators' offensive system, brought over by offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech, was a key factor in his selection. Sumrall noted that Philo's ability to operate the full offense at a higher level set him apart from Jones. "It’s been a real battle," Sumrall said. "It’s not been some empty competition. It has been real, and that’s where we are."
During his time at Georgia Tech, Philo served as a backup and appeared in eight games. He made his first college start against Gardner-Webb, completing 21 of 28 passes for 373 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Philo has worked hard since arriving at Florida in January, focusing on timing and chemistry with his new receiving corps, which includes Vernell Brown III, Micah Mays, Eric Singleton Jr., Bailey Stockton, and Dallas Wilson.
Jones, who played as a backup last season, will now serve as Philo's backup, waiting for another opportunity to prove himself. Sumrall emphasized that both quarterbacks have similar arm talent and running ability, but Philo's operational skills gave him the edge.
The Gators, who finished last season with a 4-8 record, are looking to improve with Philo at the helm. The team boasts a strong supporting cast, including second-team All-SEC running back Jadan Baugh, who rushed for 1,170 yards and 10 touchdowns last year. With three years of eligibility remaining, Philo could provide the stability the program needs as it rebuilds under Sumrall's leadership.
