(Iowa) -- There are 55-thousand open jobs in Iowa with many to pick from by this spring's college graduates.

Iowa Workforce Development Director Beth Townsend says there are job opportunities in a number of sectors.

"For those kids who are getting engineering degrees, teaching degrees, RN degrees, the kind of degrees we normally see, there are plenty of opportunities here in the state and I hope they consider staying home," said Townsend.

Townsend adds there are also jobs in the healthcare, IT, construction and biotech industries. She says grads that have any type of AI education are also expected to be in demand in Iowa.

She encourages graduates to research the companies they're applying at and look for jobs that provide experience and growth instead of just chasing a paycheck.

Townsend also suggests job seekers use the state job databank, which is searchable by occupation, region and salary at iowaworks.gov.
