A Lincoln, Nebraska assault investigation is now linked to a Carter Lake, Iowa homicide investigation.

Police say a Jacksonville, Florida man is in custody accused of attacking a police officer in a southwest Lincoln fast food restaurant.

Lincoln Police had responded Tuesday night to a call of a disturbance at the business.

Investigators say as 37-year -old Joseph Bertolino was being arrested, he tried to grab the officer's service weapon, with a round being fired into the floor.

An officer was treated for a bullet fragment injury.

A taser was used in the arrest.

Bertolino was booked on suspicion of attempted first-degree assault on an officer.

But during booking, Bertolino made concerning statements to law enforcement about an incident at the "Country Inn and Suites Hotel" on Abbott Drive in Carter Lake earlier Tuesday evening.

As Lincoln Police were calling Carter Lake Police, a witness called the Carter Lake department requesting a welfare check on a person at the "Country Inn and Suites."

Carter Lake Police then found a deceased male inside a hotel room.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and family notification.

Charges in Iowa are pending.

This is an ongoing investigation.
