(Washington, D.C.) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to establish a new National Food Safety Center in the Des Moines metro.
The USDA says it will repurpose its' existing space in Urbandale to house administrative, technical and support operations at the facility.
“This is about building a stronger, more resilient food safety system for the country. By establishing a National Food Safety Center in Iowa and expanding our scientific capabilities, USDA is ensuring that the Food Safety and Inspection Service is positioned where it can best support American agriculture and protect public health,” said Secretary Brooke L. Rollins.
She says President Trump wants to ensure consumers have the safest and most affordable food supply in the world.
The Food Safety Center will become the agency's largest office in the U.S., with about 200 employees.
