(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- The single percentage point that separates Cedar Rapids Schools and the union representing their teachers is a lot bigger than it seems.

Negotiations for a new contract began yesterday with the union asking for a 3.5% salary increase and the District offering 2.5%.

The teacher's union says they appreciate the District's financial position, but hope for a salary increase that at least matches the inflation rate.

Cedar Rapids Schools are looking at cutting teachers to balance their budget.

The two sides have until May 30th to come to an agreement.
