Study: Iowa Auto Insurance Rates Expected to Drop in 2026

(Iowa) -- A new national study finds more than half of U.S. states can expect auto insurance rates to drop this year.

Insurance comparison website ValuePenguin looked at auto insurance rate changes from all 50 states since 2022 and found that Iowa insurers are decreasing premiums by 6.91%, the largest decrease of any state in the country. The average cost of car insurance in Iowa this year is expected to be roughly $170 dollars a month, 18% percent lower than the national average and making Iowa the 12th most affordable state in the country for auto insurance.

ValuePenguin finds that in Iowa, University Heights and Ames will have the lowest premiums statewide in 2026, while Bedford and Carter Lake will see the state's highest premiums. The full study is available on ValuePenguin's website.
