(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- A man convicted and sentenced for the murder of Melody Hoffman last year will not be getting a new trial.

A judge refused the request from Dakota Van Patten that his trial be redone because he says his lawyer's didn't provide him an effective defense.

Van Patten was sentenced to life in prison Friday for conspiring with McKinley Louisma to kidnap and murder Hoffman.

Louisma was also sentenced to life in prison for the crime.
