(Des Moines, IA) -- A federal judge is ordering the U.S. government to provide bond hearings for two people being held in Iowa county jails by Homeland Security.

A Columbian man who settled in Des Moines, and a Mexican woman living in Cedar Rapids are just two of hundreds of asylum seekers around the country being denied bond hearings.

The latest ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Locher of the Southern District of Iowa, is one of an overwhelming majority of court decisions around the nation rejecting the Trump administration’s interpretation of the law as requiring mandatory detention without the opportunity to argue for bond.
