(Johnson County, IA) -- Johnson County is one step closer to getting a new jail.
The Board of Supervisors is approving plans for a facility that can house 120 inmates with the capability of expanding to 140 beds.
Sheriff Brad Kunkel says the current jail is often overcrowded and there are questions about its structural integrity.
The county decided last month to go it alone on the jail after exploring a partnership with Iowa City.
The county hopes to have a funding initiative for the new jail on the November 2026 ballot.
