(Des Moines, IA) -- Interim Des Moines Public School Superintendent Matt Smith has a new, two year contract. The board approved the contract Thursday morning. Smith says he's honored to step back into the position and help lead an amazing team into the future. Smith joined the Des Moines Public School District as the principal at North High in 2001. He has served as an associate superintendent since 2018.
Smith assumed the interim superintendent role on Friday, September 26, following the detention of former superintendent Ian Roberts. Roberts resigned the position after being arrested by ICE for being in the U-S illegally and on weapons charges. He is currently in the Polk County Jail in Des Moines under federal custody.
Smith has a BS in secondary education from Baylor University in Waco, TX, and a M.Ed in educational leadership from Sam Houston University in Huntsville, Texas.
