(Iowa City, IA) -- Plans for a joint Iowa City-Johnson County law enforcement headquarters and jail are officially dead.

The County Board of Supervisors is voting to end the project to partner with the city on a new facility to replace the aging Johnson County Jail.

Sheriff Brad Kunkel said last week that he didn't feel the city was committed to the project and recommended to the county go it alone.

The county hopes to put a bond referendum for a new jail on the November 2026 ballot.
