(Marshalltown, IA) -- Public health officials say the number of confirmed Legionnaires' disease cases in Marshall County has jumped to 52, a significant increase from the 40 cases reported on Friday.
The outbreak, which is clustered in north-central Marshalltown, has been linked to one death, identified as retired Catholic priest Reverend Bernard Grady. In a major step in the investigation, the county's public health director announced plans to test all cooling towers in the Marshalltown area, as officials believe a contaminated tower is the most likely source.
Samples have been sent to a lab in Iowa City, but officials caution that receiving definitive results could take several weeks.
In the meantime, residents are urged to maintain clean water systems and seek immediate medical care for any respiratory symptoms.
