(Iowa City, IA) - The first step towards a collaboration on a new Johnson County Jail is in the books.
Iowa City City Council and the County Board of Supervisors held a joint meeting yesterday to discuss a new law enforcement facility that would be shared between the Sheriff's Office and Iowa City Police.
Sheriff Brad Kunkel laid out the issues with the existing jail, and the needs of a new facility.
Kunkel says the final decision should be put in the hands of Johnson County voters.
A joint commission will be setup next month with hopes of a ballot referendum next year.
