Iowa Approves $85,000 Settlement In Lawsuit From LGBTQ+ Students

(DES MOINES, IA) -- The State of Iowa will pay $85,000 to settle a lawsuit with a group of LGBTQ+ students who were ordered to leave the State Capitol during a 2020 advocacy trip.

The State Appeal Board approved the settlement Tuesday, which does not require the state to admit wrongdoing. The lawsuit alleged discrimination after state troopers directed several transgender students to use a specific restroom, leading to a dispute that ended with the entire group's expulsion from the building.

The case was filed before a 2025 state law repealed gender identity protections from the Iowa Civil Rights Act, a change that a state attorney noted would prevent such a lawsuit from being filed today.
