Rivalry Heats Up During Hate Week Ahead of Cy-Hawk Showdown

(Ames, IA) -- It’s almost time for the annual Iowa vs. Iowa State football game, but college students at both schools are already fueling the rivalry during this year’s Hate Week.

“They’re pretty crazy. I’m reading this one right here, and that’s a good one,” said Caleb, a student at Iowa State University. “I think it’s funny. Every year it’s funny. People get really riled up, and it’s always a good time.”

Students from both the University of Iowa and Iowa State University participate in Hate Week by painting trash-talk slogans and hanging them outside their homes.

Signs criticizing football players, coaches, and students, like “Watching the Hawkeyes is like watching paint dry” and “Caitlin farts”, are spread throughout Iowa State’s campus. And those are some of the more tame examples.

The Cy-Hawk game kicks off tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.
