Republican U.S. Senator Joni Ernst announced Tuesday morning that she's not running for re-election.

Just a few hours later, Iowa U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson announced that she's jumping in the race.

"I'm excited to announce that I am running for the United States Senate. My priorities have been Iowans priorities. I continue to hear those every single day as I'm out in my Congressional District and soon to be the entire state," said Hinson.

Hinson represents Iowa's Second District, which surrounds Cedar Rapids. She was first elected to U.S. Congress in 2020.

"I'm running to be President Trump's top ally in the United States Senate because we have to work on continuing to deliver that America First agenda that is working for Iowans every single day."

Hinson was interviewed by Simon Conway on NewsRadio 1040 WHO. She already has an opponent.

A candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives switched races. Democrat Bob Krause says he's now running to replace Iowa U.S. Senator Joni Ernst. Krause, a former state representative, and U.S. Army veteran from Burlington says a Senate run is a better fit for him. Krause is now endorsing Christina Bohannan in the Iowa 1st Congressional District race.
