University of Iowa Health Care is expanding its AirCare emergency transport with a new ECMO team.

UIHC says its new extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO Program will improve critical life support for people facing severe heart or lung failure.

The team will use equipment that helps provide oxygen to the body when the heart or lungs can't.

The ECMO team will operate out of UIHC's Medical Center in Iowa City and will be able to reach patients within 170 miles, including in surrounding states.
