(Council Bluffs, IA) -- An Iowa public defender who lost her law license for shoplifting says her low pay forced her to steal to support her family.
The Iowa Supreme Court suspended attorney Cassi Corinn Wigington’s law license for six months after she admitted stealing more than 300 items worth $1,500-$5,000 from a Hy-Vee over several weeks. Wigington said low public-defender pay left her unable to support four children and her mother, but the disciplinary board noted she took boxed wine, liquor, and an ice maker, undercutting her claim.
The suspension takes effect 10 days from the order; she must apply for reinstatement and prove she didn’t practice during the suspension.
