(Dubuque, IA) -- The Dubuque County Attorney has ruled that officers were legally justified in using deadly force during a July 1 shooting death of 36-year-old James Sherrill. The incident occurred during what law enforcement described as a high-risk traffic stop.
According to officials, Sherrill failed to cooperate with officers and reached for a firearm during the encounter. In response, officers opened fire. Sergeant Adam Williams was also shot and injured during the incident.
Sherrill was pronounced dead at the scene.
