(Iowa City, IA) -- Iowa City is extending the free transit program for another year.
The two year pilot-project offering free rides on Iowa City buses has been a hit since it was introduced in August 2023.
The city says ridership is up 68% and riders have saved $3-million in fares.
City leaders say the program has also reduced pollution by removing the equivalent of 1.8 million miles of car trips from city streets.
Iowa City is funding the program through an increase in franchise fees and parking rates.
