(Dubuque, IA) -- The Dubuque City Council unanimously voted to restore gender identity as a protected class in the city's civil rights ordinance.

The City Council received backlash after previously voting to leave it out of the ordinance update during a meeting last week. The Mayor of Dubuque, Brad Cavanagh, took to Facebook and said the exclusion of gender identity was an accident, and scheduled a special session to update the language.

The addition of gender identity passed 7 to 0.
