The Council Bluffs Police and Fire Departments and the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office announce the official launch of "Project Lifesaver," a public safety initiative to help quickly locate individuals who are prone to wandering due to cognitive conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, or other developmental challenges.
"Project Lifesaver" participants wear a small, battery-powered transmitter on their wrist or ankle that emits a unique radio frequency. If a participant goes missing, trained first responders use specialized equipment to track the signal and locate the individual, often in 30 minutes or less.
"Project Lifesaver" is designed for individuals who are suffering with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other related mental dysfunction disorders who may be at risk of wandering from a caregiver.
It's also to protect those with Down Syndrome, Autism, or other illnesses or injuries that may place him/her at risk of wandering.
To qualify, participants must:
--Live in Council Bluffs or Pottawattamie County
--Have a diagnosis that presents a wandering risk
--Have a full-time caregiver who agrees to oversee daily equipment use
--Be physically able and willing (with support) to wear the transmitter at all times
Initial funding has allowed the program to start, however, continued funding is essential for equipment maintenance, battery replacement, training, and program expansion.
They are actively seeking community partnerships and donations to support the long-term success of the program through the Community Foundation for Western Iowa.
