Iranian hackers have threatened to release 100 gigabytes of emails allegedly stolen from individuals connected to President Donald Trump. The emails reportedly involve key figures such as White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, former adviser Roger Stone and Stormy Daniels. The hacking group, operating under the pseudonym Robert, has not disclosed the content of the emails or when they plan to release them, according to Reuters.
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) described the threat as a "calculated smear campaign" aimed at damaging President Trump and other federal officials. CISA spokesperson Marci McCarthy stated that the material is "purportedly stolen and unverified" and emphasized that those responsible will be brought to justice. The hacking group previously released some emails before the U.S. presidential election last year.
The threat comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran following American strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June. The hackers claimed their decision to potentially leak the emails changed after President Trump intervened in the Iran-Israel crisis. Federal authorities have warned of continued Iranian cyberattacks, which could target critical infrastructure and American companies with ties to Israel.
