(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- 17 years after the Cedar River crested at a historic 31.12 feet, Cedar Rapids is more than a quarter done with implementing flood control protections to prevent another devastating flood.

The Institute for Water Resources estimates that $5.4-billion in damage was done to over 6,800 homes and 750 businesses over a 10-square mile area.

The city will spend $750 million on flood protection by the time all the planned structures are complete.

It's also been 17 years since the Iowa River crested at 31.53 feet in Iowa City and Coralville.

Damage there was estimated at over $250 million dollars.
