Iowa’s Healthy Kids Food Program Underway with Issues Reported

(DES MOINES, IA) — Iowa’s “Healthy Kids Iowa” summer food program began earlier this month following federal approval in May.

The program provides pre-selected food boxes valued at $40 per child, replacing the federal Summer EBT debit card model. Food pantries in Des Moines and other areas have reported early distribution and storage challenges.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services says it is working with food banks to address concerns and gather feedback.
