(Iowa City, IA) -- A policy that would ban Iowa's public universities from requiring DEI courses or Critical Race Theory content for majors, minors, or certificates is being delayed.

A final vote by The Iowa Board of Regents originally set for this week will now be held next month to allow for changes after backlash.

Faculty unions argue the proposal infringes on academic freedom and may violate state law and the First Amendment. The University of Iowa graduate student union says the policy amounts to censorship.

The Board of Regents say the goal of the policy is to prevent instructors from presenting controversial ideas as settled fact to combat a national crisis of confidence in higher education.
