(Des Moines, IA) -- A new law allows Iowa students to be excused from school for private religious classes.
The changes to the state's existing chronic absenteeism law allows the absences for private religious classes no more than 5 hours per week.
Organizations hosting the religious classes must make attendance records available schools, and transportation must be given by the child's parents, guardians, or the organization.
A 1952 Supreme Court ruling allows parents to remove students from school for private religious instruction.
The bill was one of 24 signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds on Friday.
