(Des Moines, IA) -- Firefighters and other first responders in Iowa are gaining expanded disability benefits. Previously, only 14 types of cancer were covered under their plans, but firefighters have been advocating for broader coverage for several years.

House File 969 redefines cancer in this section of the Iowa Code to include all types of cancer. The new law will also adjust contribution rates for first responder retirement programs to help cover the costs associated with the expansion.

Governor Kim Reynolds signed the bill at a public event this morning.
