(Iowa) -- Two boating-related fatalities have been reported in Iowa so far this summer. Representatives from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) say many boating accidents share common causes and most are preventable.
"A lot of times, boating accidents are caused by individuals not looking out for other boats, so it's very important that the operator of the boat looks all around," said Susan Stocker, Boating Law Administrator and Education Coordinator for the Iowa DNR. "Boat incidents happen when boats aren't going the proper speed limit or are getting too close to other boats."
Stocker says boaters can stay safe by wearing life jackets and remaining alert while on the water.
As more Iowans head to lakes and rivers this summer, the DNR is also reminding people not to mix alcohol with boating.
"The effects of the wind, the sun, and the waves enhances the effects of alcohol. And unfortunately, even though people are surrounded by water, chances are they’re not drinking enough of it, so they become dehydrated," Stocker said.
Similar to Iowa’s motor vehicle laws, boat operators are not allowed to have a blood alcohol content over .08. Stocker recommends that everyone on board wait until they’re back on shore before consuming alcohol.
