(Elma, IA) — Police are investigating a welfare check turned shooting in rural Elma. According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, 49-year-old Mark Michael Zweibohmer called 911 on May 28 to request a welfare check at his residence on 160th Street.
When law enforcement arrived around 3:38 p.m., Zweibohmer allegedly opened fire on officers, including the Howard County Sheriff, two deputies, and an Iowa State Patrol trooper. Officers returned fire, but no injuries were reported.
Zweibohmer was arrested and charged with four counts of attempted murder of a peace officer. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the ongoing investigation.
