(Des Moines, IA) -- Higher tuition at Iowa's regent universities could undermine the state's attempts to keep graduates living and working in Iowa.

Students representatives made that point before the Iowa Board of Regents on Monday while arguing against planned tuition hikes.

The representatives say the Regents should seek more funding from the state rather than making Iowa's universities a less attractive option by trying to get more money from students.

Under the proposal, tuition would increase 3-percent for resident undergraduates - amounting to just over $9,500 at University of Iowa and Iowa State; and almost $8,800 at Northern Iowa.
