(Des Moines, IA) -- A bill in the state legislature would ensure that Iowans can use fireworks during Fourth of July celebrations.

State lawmakers want to stop municipalities from putting any restrictions on the use of fireworks. Des Moines is one of several cities around the state that bans people from setting off their fireworks year-round, including Independence Day. Republicans in the legislature say they want to send a message to the federal government that they're ready to host the nation's 250th anniversary celebration next year. Opponents of the bill are concerned about the negative effects of fireworks on pets and veterans with PTSD. Senate File 303 would prevent restrictions on fireworks on July 3rd, 4th, and December 31st.

The bill is headed to the Governor's desk.
