(Sioux City, IA) -- A former Algona meatpacking worker is facing life in prison after a pandemic money laundering scheme.

Forty-eight-year-old Yovany Ciero was convicted for his involvement in a Paycheck Protection Program scheme beginning in July 2020. The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa says that Ciero claimed he and about 100 others were self-employed and earned $100,000 in gross income in 2019, when he actually worked at the meatpacking plant. He was convicted of multiple felonies, including 23 counts of money laundering.
