Iowa has received federal approval for a new summer nutrition initiative called Healthy Kids Iowa.
The program will serve as an alternative to the federal SUN Bucks program and aims to provide $40 in fresh food each month to eligible families through community distribution sites. State officials say the initiative focuses on healthier options at a lower cost through partnerships with food banks and local providers.
Iowa is one of 11 states not participating in the SUN Bucks program this summer. Families can apply through The Emergency Food Assistance Program.
