(Sioux City, IA) -- The Iowa Attorney General's office has ruled the fatal shooting of a suspect by a Sioux City police officer was legally justified.

Police say Vicente Hernandez attempted to flee from officers after a traffic stop, moving from the passenger to the driver's seat of a car. During a physical struggle, Hernandez was able to reach the gas pedal. An officer's leg was trapped inside as the car moved forward and accelerated. The officer fired two shots at Hernandez to stop the car. He later died at a hospital from his injuries. Attorney General Brenna Bird said Hernandez didn't comply with officers' requests during the stop, and had high levels of meth in bloodstream at the time of his death.
