Defense Department Honors Council Bluffs Fire Department

The Pentagon announces the Council Bluffs, Iowa Fire Department is selected as one of the 15 recipients of the 2024 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest U.S. government honor for employers supporting National Guard and Reserve employees.

Firefighter Anthony Wojtalewicz, a U.S. Army Reserve, nominated the Council Bluffs Fire Department for the 2024 Freedom Award.

The Bluffs Fire Department emerged from 1,758 nominations submitted by employers across all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia.

In its 29th year, the Freedom Award began in 1996 under the auspices of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to recognize exceptional employer support, with 355 honorees so far.

The Council Bluffs Fire Department will be formally recognized at the Pentagon in late August.
