Iowa National Guard, State Patrol Head To Texas To Help Secure The Border

(Des Moines, IA) -- More than 100 Iowa National Guard Members are deploying to Texas today to help secure the southern border.

Governor Kim Reynolds announced Thursday, March 28, that 110 Iowa National Guard members, eight Iowa State Troopers, and two Iowa Department of Public Safety sergeants will be a part of the mission, Operation Lonestar.

The State Troopers and Iowa DPS deployed to Texas Sunday, March 31 and are scheduled to return April 27.

Most of the National Guard members will return May 3rd, with five staying until September 30 to continue to aid the Texas Military Department.

They will provide ground vehicle maintenance and public affairs support.

Funding for the mission is coming from federal dollars given to Iowa from the American Rescue Plan.
