ANKENY, Iowa - Milk that was spoiled during the power outage this week is flowing into Fourmile Creek near Ankeny after a grocery store employee dumped the milk into the storm drain.

The Department of Natural Resources is working with Hy-Vee and a private environmental cleanup company hired by Hy-Vee to stop the milk from going further.

DNR officers responded to a tributary of the Fourmile Creek in Ankeny after getting reports of the water turning white and fish struggling at the surface. T

he DNR traced the spill to the Hy-Vee Store at 410 N. Ankeny Boulevard.

The store reports 800 gallons of milk were dumped into the drain after power went out for 19 hours this week, leaving the milk unusable.

No dead fish have been found, but the DNR says as bacteria break down the milk they will use up oxygen and could choke out wildlife in the water.
