Mahaska County Sheriff's Deputy Dies in Accidental Shooting

OTTUMWA, Iowa - The Mahaska County Sheriff's Office says a deputy died Tuesday morning after a firearm went off accidentally.

According to the Ottumwa Police Department, officers responded to reports of the accidental shooting around 7:20am Tuesday morning. Responding officers found 35 year-old Sheriff's Deputy Brian Rainey suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. Rainey later died of his injuries.

Investigators say Rainey was off duty at the time of the shooting.

The investigation indicated the firearm went off accidentally.
