Mount Mercy University to hold virtual Commencement 2020 exercises May 17

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (May 13, 2020) – Mount Mercy University will hold virtual Commencement 2020 exercises on Sunday, May 17, at 1 p.m.

Mount Mercy will confer degrees upon approximately 380 undergraduate students and 170 students in graduate programs. Three members of faculty will be given emeritus status: Professor of Education Dr. Janet Rohner, Professor of Education Dr. Ellen Warrington, and Professor of Sociology Dr. Mohammad Chaichian.

Margaret Peterson, a native of Wapello, was chosen as the student speaker. Margaret was president of MMU A Cappella, co-president of LGBTQ+ Alliance, vice president of the Law & Politics Club, and member of the Academic Integrity Committee, Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology, and Sigma Alpha Pi National Society of Leadership and Success. Margaret also organized several events on campus, such as Halloween on the Hill, Rainbow Fest, and the Safe Zone forum. Passionate about making a difference, Margaret has volunteered with two political campaigns, tutored at the Catherine McAuley Center, and has spent four summers in Grand Bois, Haiti, training teachers in music education. Margaret has accepted a placement with the Peace Corps in eastern Europe, where she will be teaching English to students in preparation for college entrance exams. After her two years with the Peace Corps, Margaret plans to apply to graduate or law school.
