Iowa Softball: Hawkeyes Fall to the Panthers

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Iowa softball team (18-29, 4-16 Big Ten) fell to Northern Iowa, (23-22 13-10 MV), 4-2, on Tuesday evening inside the UNI Dome.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hawkeyes started off hot with a hit from sophomore AraleeBogar. Bogar stole second then third. Senior Mallory Kilian hit one right up the middle for a RBI single, scoring Bogar.

UNI responded with a one-run home run in the bottom of the first.

Iowa threatened in the top of the fourth, when junior DoniRaeMayhew got on base by a hit-by-pitch, and junior Lea Thompson notched a single but both runners were left on.

UNI took the lead in the fourth with a RBI double to left field, and a two-run home run. UNI led 4-1.

Iowa added one run in the sixth inning. Freshmen Cameron Cecil and Sydney Owens both notched hits. Freshman Abby Lien got on by a fielder’s choice, Cecil was retired on her way to third. Mayhew scored Lien on a fielder’s choice, and Owens got out advancing to third.

The Hawkeyes threatened in the top of the seventh with a hit from junior HavynMonteer, but couldn’t get the two runs they needed, Iowa fell to UNI, 4-2.

IN THE CIRCLE

Sophomore Sarah Lehmann pitched a complete game and notching seven strikeouts, a career-high.

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes will host Ohio State in its final series of the 2019 season. The series starts Friday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m. (CT), at Bob Pearl Field. Friday’s game is Parent’s Day, honoring the parents of the Iowa softball team. The series will continue on Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m., for Alumni Day, and conclude Sunday May 5, at 12 p.m. for Senior Day.
