Mercy Medical Center to host pre-prom event

Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids will host the 2019 Hall-Perrine Cancer Center Prom Sunday January 20th.

The event is not just a chance to show off the latest prom fashions and win prizes. Medical experts from the center will be there to talk about tanning and skin cancer awareness. They want to explain the dangers of tanning booths, citing how it can make a person develop Melanoma.

Melanoma is the more dangerous type of skin cancer. Health experts says almost ten thousand people die each year with thousands of new cases being diagnosed over the same time.

Experts are pushing for more events like this. They say they've seen a 53 percent increase in high school-aged students who are tanning in the last decade.
