CRPD apprehend suspect after weekend standoff

A standoff negotiation happened early Saturday morning in Cedar Rapids.

Police responded to the 4100 block of 31st Avenue Southwest around 6:30.

Authorities say Austin Pieper was trying to elude officers.

A police report states Pieper did not cooperate when officers told him to yield. It states, Pieper told officers to “shoot him.”

The department said officers tried a standoff negotiation, but it failed. Officers then deployed pepper balls into the vehicle and eventually officers used stop sticks to disable the vehicle. They say Pieper then hit a cement pillar.

Police took Pieper into custody. He faces multiple charges, including operating while intoxicated, attempting to elude, failure to maintain control and interference with official acts.
